- AlexanderHamiltonwasasignificantfigureinthepoliticalandeconomicdevelopmentoftheearlyUnitedStates.HeservedintheAmericanRevolutionaryWarandbecameanaidetoGeneralGeorgeWashington.Hewasoneoftheauthors(alongwithJohnJayandJamesMadison)ofaseriesofessaysknowasTheFederalistPapers,whichwerewritteninsupportoftheratificationoftheproposedConstitution.ScholarsandothersstillrefertotheseessaystothisdayforinterpretationoftheConstitution.AsthefirstSecretaryoftheTreasuryinGeorgeWashington’sCabinet,Hamiltonwasaproponentofastrongcentralizedgovernment.Hamiltonpursuedmanyactions(somecontroversial)inanattempttoprovidefinancialstabilityforthenewgovernment,includingtheestablishmentoftheU.S.MintandaNationalBank.Ironically,hemaymostoftenberememberedfortheinfamouspistolduelwithAaronBurrthatresultedinHamilton’sdeath.
