- ShortlyaftertheoutbreakofWar—afterthefirstcontingenthadbeenmobilised,andwhiletheywereundergoingtraining—itbecameevidentthatitwouldbenecessarytoraiseanotherforcetoproceedontheheelsofthefirst.ThreeInfantryBrigadeswiththeirAmbulanceshadalreadybeenformed;ordersforafourthwerenowissued,andnaturallytheAmbulancewouldbedesignatedFourthFieldAmbulance.TheFourthBrigadewascomposedofthe13thBattalion(N.S.W.),14th(Victoria),15th(Queensland)and16th(WesternAustralia)—commandedrespectivelybyLieutenant-ColonelBurnage,Lieutenant-ColonelCourtnay,Lieutenant-ColonelCannonandLieutenant-ColonelPope.TheBrigadewasinchargeofColonelMonash,V.D.,withLieutenant-ColonelMcGlinnashisBrigadeMajor.
